Identity and publication design for an exhibition.
The curator of the Edith-Russ-Haus für Medienkunst (Edith Russ House for Media Art) in Oldenburg, asked me to design the identity and the publication for the exhibition: “SOMETHING OTHER THAN PHOTOGRAPHY: PHOTO & MEDIA”. This exhibition presented a selection of international artistic stances from the ’70s to the present that in principle work with the possibilities presented by photographic information.
I approached the design from a very neutral and typographical point of view, so the artists were the ones providing the content, for both the identity and the bilingual publication. The content was based on selected images of the artists’ works and theoretical texts.
The texts in German are set in Lyon typeface, a contemporary interpretation of Robert Granjon’s seminal serif typefaces from the 16th century, designed by the German book and type designer Kai Bernau in 2010, bringing a fresh point of view to classical Renaissance forms. The texts in English are set in Arboria, a contemporary geometric sans serif designed by José Manuel Urós from Type–Tones, that gives personality to the identity, (as the main title is in that language). They both combine well in colour and proportions.
The publication is Swiss-binded to emphasize the idea of compilation of different sources and authors.
