Across Borders is a collaborative poster design project initiated by Mayúscula, whose goal is to contribute to a social cause by buying them. Each poster is the result of the collaborative work between two designers, and I was invited to create one in collaboration with Lynne Yun.
The project connected 50 recognized designers, illustrators, calligraphers or typographers from 30 different countries, resulting in a collection of 30 posters that were exhibited from November 17 to 29 at the Disseny Hub Barcelona, as part of the Barcelona Design Week. The resulting posters from this collaborative work can be purchased online on the Across Borders website until December 20 with the aim of raising funds for the acquisition of Dignity Kits for Syrian refugee women in Lebanon through the NGO Rescate.
The design
The starting point was to “divide” the canvas in two halves, and make the words play together by touching each other, as a visual metaphor of erasing the borders (Fronteras in Spanish). We started with “GREETINGS” written by Lynne, and based on it I draw the letters to compose “FRONTERAS”. First, I worked on a sort of contemporary gothic letters, but combined with the calligraphy seem to lack contrast, consequently, it evolved in a stronger lettering style, more compact, that also gives better legibility to the full word when together.
Size: 50 cm x 70 cm
Paper: Fedrigoni Arena EW 250gsm
Printed on HP Indigo with Pantone + Fluor Pink
