Solis is a sans serif typeface family used for the AccuWeather rebrand in 2019. With 12 fonts in 6 weights—from Thin to Black—plus italics, Solis covers the entire range of needs demanded by a major rebranding effort.
The creative branding agency loyalkaspar created a flexible design system to enhance global trust in AccuWeather, providing clarity and focus through consistent and accessible design.
Solis’s unique design was key to the new brand’s DNA. It was, as loyalkaspar put it, “Informed by the sun, engineered for clarity and truly considered for use on vertical screens and information-heavy environments.”
Client: AccuWeather
Branding Agency: loyalkaspar via TypeNetwork
Design: Laura Meseguer (helped by Dyana Weissman and Noe Blanco)
Programming & Production: Noe Blanco and Dyana Weissman (Kerns and Cains)
The design features
To start, loyalkaspar provided sketches of several letters and numbers in Regular and Bold weights (A-Z, a-z, 0—9), along with their rationale behind their sketches’ construction. The functional needs and aesthetic desires included:
— Upward and sharp shapes
— Reminiscent of geometric signage typefaces
— Wide-open apertures and curves for an optimal reading experience on any support
— Condensed structure, on mobiles and small devices with vertical screens and information-dense settings
— Versatile family to provide a good hierarchy for larger contents or large sizes for the 24/7 AccuWeather Network channel
— Accurate design of numbers
Through great teamwork, we developed a robust type family that not only provides a pleasant experience for readers but also matches the overall rebranding’s innovation and commitment to detail.

The design process
Together with the agency, we defined five phases. At the end of Phases 1 to 4, we delivered beta versions for mock-ups and testing and received feedback
Phase 1:
· Clean up of the Light and Black sketches and first sketches of the italic versions of those weights
Phase 2:
· Development and delivery of beta versions of the ASCII set (128 characters) with correct spacing for the two masters (Light and Black in Roman and Italics).
· Development and delivery of the full Latin Extended Character set (256 Characters)
· Kerning
Phase 3:
· Generation of interpolated styles for the Romans, with manual adjustments where needed: Regular, Medium, Bold and the extrapolation of Thin.
· Generation of interpolated styles for the italics
Phase 4
· Final refinement
Phase 5
· Features and production by TypeNetwork, according to their high standards.
